The Premier Show and Sale was judged this year by Mr Tim Williams. In the pre- sale show the male championship was awarded to B & H Thomas’ Celyn Steward, a fine ram which had twice won the Society’s National Show and the reserve to R. Owen’s shearling ram. N & T Hodgkinson won the reserve female rosette with their ewe lamb and the female championship with a shearling ewe which went on to be crowned Supreme Champion. In the group classes the group of three ram lambs was won by S Brodie with Matt Gibson and family winning the ewe lamb group.
Shearling ewes and ewes achieved almost 100% clearance this year with shearling ewes selling to 275gns from J Evans, 200gns for N & T Hodgkinson’s supreme champion with another at 182gns and 167gns for a trio from N & C Williams. Ewes from R Owen sold to 140gns twice with 138gns and 135gns for ewes from N & T Hodgkinson. Ewe lambs, a little harder to place, topped at 168gns for the female reserve champion and 130gns from J Neal.
Ram lambs were in great demand and produced the top selling exhibit of the day Hoggeston Dancer, a recorded ram lamb from H & E Morris which had earlier won his class, selling at 580gns. Others sold to 520gns for Springwood Drifter from J Evans and 460gns for N & T Hodgkinson’s Souldrop Roger. With an 81% clearance in the ram lambs there were less buyers for the adult rams with some good tups returning home. Shearling rams peaked at 400gns for R Owen’s reserve champion Trefri Superb, 310gns for J Jeyes’s Lawford Juke and 280gns for D & V Marshall-Cook’s Betula Stirling. Souldrop Ned, sire of the Supreme Champion, was sold by S & J Prentice for 100gns and was the only aged ram to find a new home on the day.
