A phenomenal trade at the Wiltshire Horn Premier Show and Sale saw a new breed record of 1650gns for Manor Monty, a homebred shearling ram by Manor Jon from David & Tim Williams, Southam, placed second in his class by judge J W Brigg and sold to M Jones, Gwynedd. The Male and Supreme Championships again went to a ram from B & H Thomas & Sons’s Anglesey flock, this time it was shearling ram Celyn Zeus by Celyn Wil, selling to Mr N J Bond, Cornwall for 700gns.
Another shearling ram, Highhedges Friendship the 2022 Supreme Champion at Moreton-in-Marsh from S & S Cowle, Bucks, sired by Nant John, took the eye of Angus Stovold (Brenham Estates) of Guildford, Surrey and sold for 800gns.
Leading the ram lambs at 700gns, sired by Lawford Kenilworth and going to M Rostron, Thatcham was the second placed Bradley Ronaldo bred by J Bradley, Warks followed by Springwood Gilbert by Celyn Wyn, from Mrs J Evans, Rutland selling to P Morris, Stroud for 600gns.
Ram lambs from C Shepherd, Daventry, both sired by Souldrop Quest, were the third placed Nene Nepture selling at 420gns going to N J Bond and Nene Nugget at 450gns taken home by S Brodie, Northants.
The only aged ram forward on the day was Castle Jude, exhibited by Mr and Mrs O J Campbell-Hill, taking the red rosette in his class.
Frantic bidding for all females saw 100% clearance with most going to new buyers. J Bradley headed up the ewe lambs, all daughters of Lawford Kenilworth, winning first, second and fourth places in the ewe lamb class with first and second in the group of three, finally going on to take the Female Championship with his first placed ewe lamb. Ewe lambs from his Bradley flock peaked at 410gns to M Jones and 250gns to D Thomas, Anglesey. Ewe lambs from D Thomas’ own flock realised 250gns and 210gns followed by a pen from J Brown and Mrs K Glander, Beds going for 225gns, all selling to new Society members.
Mrs J Evans’s shearling ewe took first prize in the class and high demand in the ring for shearling ewes saw her ewes selling to 380gns three times with another at 370gns, all selling to M Jones. A pen from T & J Cook, Hants reached 240gns followed by another from J Bradley’s flock at 230gns. Leading the aged ewes at 300gns and going to M Jones, was the reserve female champion and final female of the day from S & S Cowle.
The Boxes Cup, donated by the late DDL Davies, was awarded to the Supreme Champion at this show and sale for the first time and Jonathan Bradley took home the Phillip Smith Points Tankard for the second year running.
A fantastic day from start to finish for buyers and vendors alike. Ours thanks go to our judge Mr Joshua Brigg, to steward Stuart Brodie, to Tom Wrench and Rugby Farmers Mart and to the vendors, buyers and members who supported the show and sale. A very warm welcome to all our new members who bought at the sale and thank you for choosing the Wiltshire Horn for your flocks. All in all, a fantastic start to our Centenary year.
